My life as A Water Particle

“My life as water particle” was written by my 12 years old daughter Lainey Icyeza R. in September 2020 for a homework task that was given to her class to write a story about a week as a water particle. This was a result of her class learning about solids, liquids and gases.

Below is a hilarious story by Lainey that shows her own understanding of the subject. I found it funny hence sharing with the wider audience. Enjoy 🙂

My Life as A Water Particle by Lainey

My name is Willow, and I am a water particle. I am 1 week old. I have two older twin siblings Wilma and William III and my mum. My dad had an accident where he got swept away from us. We have not recovered. Anyway, I am going to tell you about my past week. I have been from Abbotsford to Zurich. I have been water vapour and a block of ice. I have been on the highest skyscraper and deep down in Mariana Trench. I have been on more adventures than William and Wilma, even my mum has had less adventure.
*
It all started when I was born in a kettle. My mum said that my dad, William Jr, was ecstatic when he found out. She said that since he was an ice block in Antartica, he could not come, but one water particle managed to find out about me! Suddenly, the kettle tipped!
I was separated from my family and suddenly… Plop! I landed in the mug. Another, Plop! Splashes of milk land in the cup. I swim to the bottom to see what was going on. I saw brown powder and white crystals, which I later found out was hot chocolate powder and sugar crystals. I made friends with Coco and Cookie. We swam up together to find the milk. We made friends with Gatete; a milk particle who was a bit older than us.
But before we could introduce ourselves, an oddly shaped silver thing came and swirled everything around. Then we found Gatete and played a bit after introducing ourselves. Gatete told us grandly that it is called a “spoon.”
Suddenly the cup tipped upwards! It was horrible 🤢. We clung together as we got sucked up by some weird pink things, “The lips” said Gatete smugly. We were quite annoyed by Gatete’s smug behavior so Coco, the prankster of the group decided she would bring him down a peg or two. She whispered it to Cookie and me and we thought that was a great idea. The plan was:
Make up some words
Gatete says that so and so is called ____
We say “Actually, it’s called _____”

So, we carried out our plan. Gatete said this is called the stomach and we said grandiosely “Actually, this is called the dustuf*. Your mum told us.” “But my mum told me…” Gatete began. But we quickly denied it. “She said it was updated.” Cookie said quickly. Then Coco burst out laughing😂. She could not help it, Gatete’s face was so funny. Then Gatete figured out it was a prank. Her face flushed with embarrassment and she took in her surroundings. And we did too. We were in a white sort of bowl shape. “Willow!” Coco shouted. “Where are you?” Then I looked down at myself. I was invisible, I realized, I must have become water vapor! So, I plunged into the water and became visible again. “There you are!” shouted Gatete. “Where were you?” “We were worried about you.” said Cookie timidly. I explained how water vapor worked. “I already-” Gatete began. Coco elbowed her sharply. Then suddenly, the water became a whirlpool, and we were separated by what I now call, a toilet.
*
I felt miserable. First my family and now my friends. It was as if- as if… My thoughts came to an abrupt halt when I saw a palm tree nearby. I was wondering why it was there when suddenly I started floating up into the air. Panicked, I looked around and saw other water particles around me. Instead of looking scared, they looked quite bored. “It’s happening again.” groaned one. “Why now?” mumbled another. “I was having a perfectly lovely day until this happened.” Then they turned and saw me. Their faces changed from annoyance to confusion to realisation. “Are you OK?” asked the groaning one in that dreadful voice that adults use with babies and toddlers🙄. “I’m fine thanks but what’s going on?” I answered, trying to hide my annoyance. They explained what was going on. “It’s water vapor” explained the other one using the same voice! 😡 “It’s when-” “I know what water vapor is.” I interrupted with a snap. “And kindly stop using that voice. It’s driving me insane!” They opened their mouths to answer, when suddenly we met a huge yellow ball.

The Sun, as they called it, seemed just as bored with this as everyone else. “Is it time already?” he yawned. “I was having a lovely dream. The clouds can tell -” Then it spotted me and made the most ridiculous face I’ve ever seen. “Hello there little one.” it said in a lisping sort of voice. I rolled my eyes. Then I got sent up to the clouds. It didn’t take long for it to get overcrowded. Then I fell.
*
I was terrified. I fell and fell until I landed on an ice block. “Willow?” said a muffled voice. “Is that you?” “Who is it?” I asked. “William Jr” said… “Papa!” I hugged the ice block. It was lovely to see him. But then I got swept away by a wave. I went everywhere you could imagine and more. Then finally I landed with a bump onto a river. Then I saw her. “Mama!” I cried. “Willow!” she cried. “Oh, I’ve missed you. Where have you been?” I told her all about my adventures then hugged her again.
*

So that’s what happened in my past week. It was exciting and all, but I prefer it at home. Turns out those other particles I met were my Aunt Wendy and Uncle Wyatt! So, I’ve met a lot of people but … I miss my dad. 😞 He was lovely in the short encounter that I had with him, but I miss the idea of him. Wait a minute… is that Dad? It is! Now everything’s perfect 😁. Unless my other friends come…

The End

Who we Are

Welcome to our blog aglimpseofperspective.com. We are two friends, mothers ,who originate from Rwanda and currently living in United Kingdom (UK). We all immigrated to the UK when we were grown ups. Growing up from our culture, and later on living in a new culture has been challenging, as well as beneficial as you always analyse life challenges and opportunities from two angles. From our long conversations about the culture shock and motherhood challenges, emerged the idea of sharing our thoughts to the world , hence the name of our blog. Since the idea of the blog involves sharing, we would also be sharing other people’s perspective not just ours.   We welcome your perspectives as well. Have fun reading our blog.
